My good friend Tom Borda and I use “Sucking the Marrow out of Life” as a banner, a rejoinder, a question. Are you sucking the marrow out of life? That is, are you living a full life: brimming, zestful, worthwhile?

It’s Thoreau via Dead Poets Society. John Keating’s original line from the movie is “sucking the marrow out of life doesn’t mean choking on the bone.” One can be too zealous in pursuits, he seems to imply.

But Thoreau also notes that “most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.”

This will be the central tension of the musings at Hog & Fox.
